I have officially left the first three stages of The Kon Mari Method, ending August on a high note. Last month I got rid of my most favorite things – paper. Well, I got rid of old used bank registers, club cards, past six years of insurance policies and every single receipt that didn’t have a tax purpose. Buh bye! My file cabinet now has only about a half dozen files hanging out. All the old, used a billion times folders are off to the recyclers and a myriad of old personal papers – shredded.
Throw that confetti in the air – like you just don’t care!
Now onto Komono, which I consider the bulk of the Kon Mari Method. I broke mine down into 1) Hobby/Office, 2) Bathroom/Linen Closet, 3) Tools and 4) Sentimental/Christmas. Depending upon your current situation – Komono can be whatever obstacle of clutter you want to attack. Be it the spare bedroom or the kitchen. By the time you have reached these areas however, your obstacle may look a bit thin. With her method, you would have already pulled out the clothes, books and papers from these areas. That overwhelming spare bedroom is getting closer and closer to being your sewing room! Or craft room. She den. How incredibly awesome is that?
I’m a starting to see areas of my living space getting light and fluffy instead of bulked down with the weight of Stuff. My once colossal mountain of washi tape is now a small mound of quality and manageable quantity. So delightful!
This coming month I will tackling the office supplies and my hobby materials. Envelopes, binders, folders, calendars, planners, and stickers (oh my). Whoever is getting my donations must be beside themselves!
I am still plodding along on my rather slow adaptation of Marie Kondo’s book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. This past month I took seven printer paper sized boxes to the thrift store for the Books portion of my journey.
WAIT? But, boosks! Yes, I know! But, when I look at it…just how many books on Yorkshire Terriers does one need? I had five…d’oh!
I am now getting to the point that I can see just how refreshing it is to add clear space and remove the dust. I am very pleased with the results of this past months goal. Unto the Paper portion of the purge!!
There are all sorts of clutter to deal with – some you create yourself and some created by others. I will never embrace minimalism, it’s not in my bones. However, I’ve noticed lately that I am spending quality energy and way too many spoons moving my crap around. I was recently talking this over with my research assistant Mrs. Monkey and she is dealing with the same issue.
What to do? I have help each month with the vacuuming of the stairs, vacuuming my bedroom, and cleaning my master bath. This is just one less thing that I have to deal with. However, my packrat tendencies are starting to become too much to deal with. Srsly, how much washi tape does this girl need? I believe that I truly want for nothing. I’m very lucky to be able to wipe my own a$$ and take care of my most basic needs (a place to rest, cover my bills, etc).
What used to be a simple task of tidying up is now a battle between my self and my energy. There are many weekend mornings when I get up before everyone else and I will cleanup my messes…but that also means that I have spent a great amount of my energy for the day – and if I have errands and appointments, egads I’m done for.
This has now become intervention level crisis (in my mind at least) and I’m looking for a solution. How do I do this without becoming a hoarder!?
